Web Designer Job Description:
The job of a web designer is to build web sites for clients. My experience spans all aspects of
online work from initial strategy to launch and marketing. I also do consulting, re-designs and
updates as well as incorporate interactive and e-commerce elements.
What is my background?
I spent six years in college learning way too many computer languages : ) I specialized in
business programming and took additional courses in business and more for general education
but my real dues were paid owning and operating multiple outlet businesses. Now that’s an
education unattainable in college! I’ve sold, purchased and designed advertising and developed
many successful business strategies and campaigns for myself and other companies. I even enjoy
a position as a business analyst for a few businesses in my area. I do cost analysis and study the
performance of businesses to increase their performance and profitability.
How did I become a freelance web designer?
Back-in-the-day, I was the only computer programmer in my band (another smile could be
inserted here)... yes, I was also a musician and vocalist, at the time. I enjoyed designing with state-
of-the-art techniques that helped us stand out above the rest on the web. I became a freelance
web designer back in the early 90's when the internet was just starting to break into homes.
What do I like most about being a freelance web designer?
I love showing people what can happen as a result of what I do. The feeling of seeing your own
presence come alive on the web is incredible but then to also reap benefits you never knew were
there? Nothing is more satisfying.
I love being my own boss. I enjoy the people that I get to meet and partner with every day and
most importantly, I get to spend time with my family.
How long does it take to build a website?
It varies depending on the data necessary, number of pages, artwork I may have to create,
whether or not you have your own domain or I acquire it for you and more. Most take about one
week. Some can take up to a month if very extensive and others are continually changing.
What advice would I give to those who want to get into web design?
Learn as much as you possibly can and never stop because web design is about using technology
that is constantly changing and never stops. If you think that you can just go to school to learn
some great new technology, get out there and be set for life as an independent designer, you are
wrong. You have to realize that you will always need to be up to par in your business game also.
If you can’t understand business from the business owner’s standpoint, you surely can’t offer a
beneficial product and you certainly can’t expect to receive any partnership requests!
